Over and over your thoughts are on instant replay. You are recapping the situation or event with no clear resolution in sight. Are the things you are reflecting on affecting your ‘now’? Reflective thoughts are past events that continue to affect our present. The emotions that are generated through this process is evidence enough that reflective thought impact our lives. Anger, pain, regret are some of the emotions that can linger on for an extended period of time.
Often times, we relive our mistakes or the mistakes of others. We ponder on our faults with no clearly defined purpose. This does not fully utilize our brain’s ability to problem solve and reflect on past experiences with the ultimate goal of self-improvement. Adding the self-improvement component to your reflective thoughts allows you to analyze your thoughts to find out
- Are there any lessons I can learn from this situation?
- What could I have done better?
- Moving forward, what do I need to change?
We can spend a lot of time thinking about what happened or what we did or did not do but very little time thinking about what we need to do differently. Focusing on “What I need to do” is extremely important. Instead of focusing on what changes other people need to make, we need to focus on ourselves since change should begin with us. The self-improvement mindset may not always help us to solve the problem but we will be way ahead in our efforts to keep learning from our life experiences. (C)
